The importance of Having a Missing Tooth Replaced
If you are missing a tooth, you should strongly consider having it replaced. Beside a concern for your appearance, a missing tooth can cause structural changes to the upper and lower arches of your mouth over time and make it difficult to eat or speak properly. A dental bridge is one of several options to replace a missing tooth. A bridge uses existing teeth to bridge (span) an area where a tooth is missing. A bridge can be made from gold, metal alloys, or porcelain, and it will be strong and durable. Some materials are more esthetically pleasing than others, and Dr. Firlik will discuss these options with you. What is Involved in the Process? The process of creating and installing a bridge is completed in two visits. Dr. Firlik begins by contouring an existing tooth to create an abutment (base) where the bridge will be attached. After the abutment has been shaped, an impression is taken of the area, and a model is created that is used to design a bridge. When placed, the bridge will consist of two crowns placed on the abutments and a new tooth ("pontic") in the middle that replaces the missing tooth. Temporary Bridges While awaiting the new bridge, Dr. Firlik will fit you with a temporary bridge until your permanent bridge is ready. The temporary bridge will serve to protect the abutment and the exposed gum areas, and will be esthetically appealing. When your permanent bridge has been created, Dr. Firlik will see you again to fit and bond the bridge in place. In a short time you will adjust to the bridge, and after a few days it will feel like you have your own teeth again. You will be encouraged to eat soft foods for the first few days after having your bridge placed; after that, you will be able to resume eating whatever you wish. It makes sense to make an appointment today to restore your smile! Dr. Firlik is ready to restore your smile with a great fitting and esthetically pleasing bridge.
