What is an inlay or onlay? It is a tooth restoration for a cavity that is either too large for a filling or too small for a crown. It is sometimes referred to as an indirect restoration.
Advantages of Inlays and Onlays:
- They protect tooth structure without extensive tooth reshaping.
- Discoloration over time is reduced.
- Most of the tooth structure is preserved, unlike the reduction of a natural tooth when a crown is placed.
- Inlays and onlays seal teeth very effectively, protecting them from harmful bacteria.
What Does the Procedure for Inlays & Onlays Involve?
At your first appointment, Dr. Firlik will remove any decay from the tooth being restored and take an impression of your tooth. A new inlay or onlay will be created for you. While awaiting your new restoration, Dr. Firlik will give you a temporary restoration to allow you to eat and function normally until the inlay or onlay is prepared.
At your second appointment, Dr. Firlik will provide a color match and replicate the shape of your restoration. She will remove the temporary restoration, assess the restoration to ensure a perfect fit, and bond the restoration to your tooth. Then she will examine your bite to make certain the inlay or onlay fits properly and comfortably.
Dr. Firlik can restore your teeth with inlays or onlays, and she will be happy to discuss this option to enhance your smile.
